Is Loose-Leaf Tea Cheaper per Cup Than Whittard’s Teabags?

Compare Whittard’s English Breakfast teabags and loose tea by the cup. See how your scoop size, delivery and a Twinings alternative change the cost.

For a 200ml cup of Whittard English Breakfast, the traditional teabags work out cheaper. At the UK prices checked on 4 November 2026, one bag cost 15.9p. A 2g serving from the 100g pouch cost 21.9p before delivery. That sixpence buys a different tea as well as a different way to brew it. Whittard sources the loose leaf from West Java, while the teabags contain a blend of Sri Lankan, Kenyan and Indian teas.

What does one pack make?

Whittard listed its 50 English Breakfast teabags at £7.95 and its 100g loose-leaf pouch at £10.95. At one bag or 2g of leaf per cup, either pack makes 50 brews. Two people drinking one cup each at breakfast would get 25 mornings from either. The pouch would cost the household £3 more over those mornings, assuming each person likes the tea at that strength.

If you already buy loose leaf, the 140g caddy offers a closer call. At £14.95 it comes to about 21.4p a cup over 70 cups. You spend £4 more upfront than on the pouch and gain 20 cups and a tin you can keep. For someone trying this tea for the first time, the pouch leaves less to finish if the West Java tea turns out to be lighter than they like.

How much leaf goes into your own mug?

Whittard’s brewing instructions start with a teaspoon of loose tea or one teabag for 200ml of water. Measure how much water you actually pour into your favourite mug. Then place a bowl on kitchen scales, zero the display and add ten of your usual spoonfuls of dry leaf. Divide the weight by ten. Weighing them together makes the difference between a level and a heaped spoon easier to see on ordinary kitchen scales.

Suppose ten spoonfuls weigh 25g. A 100g pouch would give you 40 mugs at 2.5g each, bringing the price to about 27.4p a mug. One teabag would still cost 15.9p. If you usually use two bags for that same mug, however, they would cost 31.8p. In that kitchen, the loose tea would cost less. Make the comparison at the strength you would happily drink every morning.

What changes when you order a single pack?

Whittard lists £3.95 standard UK postage for a small order and free UK store collection. With standard postage, the teabags come to £11.90, or 23.8p per cup. The pouch comes to £14.90, or 29.8p per cup at the 2g measure. If a shop is already on your route and collection is available, collecting the tea removes 7.9p per cup from either calculation.

To check an offer, look up a Whittard of Chelsea discount code, check whether your chosen tea qualifies, then divide the checkout total by the number of cups you expect. If you need to buy an infuser as well, count its price once in your first order. An infuser you already own adds nothing to the next pouch.

How does a Twinings breakfast cup compare?

For an everyday breakfast tea to keep at work, a smaller box can make sense. Twinings listed 40 English Breakfast bags at £2.99, about 7.5p each. If its £3.95 standard UK delivery rate applies, one box alone comes to £6.94, or about 17.4p a bag. Twinings calculates postage separately for the Highlands and Islands, so use the figure shown for your address.

That gives a useful choice if you pass a Whittard shop on your way to work. A collected Whittard box costs more at the till but gives you ten extra bags, at 15.9p each against 17.4p for the single delivered Twinings box. If you are already placing a Twinings order, check the extra cost of adding the tea and whether a Twinings discount code applies. When adding the box leaves postage unchanged, the price per extra breakfast cup falls back to the cost of the tea itself.
