How Much Wall Paint Should You Buy at Toolstation for One Room?
Calculate wall paint for two coats, compare 5L and 10L costs at Toolstation and Wickes, and avoid buying more than your room needs.

A larger paint tub can have a lower price per litre and still cost more than your room needs. Before buying wall paint at Toolstation, measure the surfaces, allow for the specified coats and then compare the available tin sizes. The worked example below shows why adding the ceiling can change the sensible purchase from one 5-litre tin to a larger quantity.

Measure the walls, then account for every coat
Measure each wall’s width and height in metres and multiply them together. Add those areas, subtract substantial doors and windows, and keep the ceiling separate. A room’s floor area alone does not tell you how much wall paint to buy. Include alcoves and chimney breasts if they will receive the same paint; exclude a feature wall if it needs a different colour.
The calculation is: paintable area × number of coats ÷ coverage per litre = estimated litres. Use the coverage on the exact product rather than a figure for another paint by the same manufacturer.
For example, Toolstation’s Leyland Trade Vinyl Matt 5L listing specifies up to 14m² per litre and recommends two coats. Its stated 70m² coverage per tin is a single-coat calculation: 5 × 14. For two coats, that becomes up to 35m² of wall area.
Would one 5-litre tin cover your room?
Suppose your measured walls total 30m² after the openings have been deducted. Two coats require 60m² of coverage. Dividing by 14 gives approximately 4.29 litres. A 5-litre tin provides about 0.71 litres beyond that theoretical requirement.
That is a planning estimate, not a promise that one tin will finish every 30m² room. Leyland’s walls and ceilings guidance explains that surface condition, absorbency and texture affect coverage. Contrasting colours can need additional coats. On new plaster, follow the chosen product’s preparation instructions and include the first coat in your quantity estimate.
Now add a 12m² ceiling in the same finish and colour. Your total becomes 42m²; two coats at 14m² per litre require 6 litres. One 5-litre tin is too small even before allowing for application losses. This is why deciding whether to paint the ceiling belongs before the shopping trip.

Choose the finish before comparing prices
A cheaper white emulsion is useful only if it suits the job. Vinyl matt, contract matt and specialist hardwearing finishes are different products. Leyland describes its Vinyl Matt as wipeable, while its guidance points to tougher finishes for demanding areas. If frequent washing is your priority, check that requirement before calculating litres and comparing baskets.
For a new colour, test a suitable sample in the room’s daylight and evening light before committing to a large quantity. Check whether the sample matches your intended finish. Keep the colour name and finish with your measurements so that a cheaper-looking alternative does not quietly change the specification.
Compare the cost of enough paint, not just the litre price
Prices checked on 7 November 2026 put the Toolstation 5L Brilliant White Vinyl Matt at £26.99 including VAT. Wickes listed its 5L Brilliant White Vinyl Matt at £30 and its 10L Pure Brilliant White Vinyl Matt at £40. These are listed product prices before delivery or travel costs; confirm the colour and finish on the actual tub.
For the 30m² walls-only example, a £40 tub costs £13.01 more than the £26.99 tin, even though its price per litre is lower. For the walls-and-ceiling example requiring 6 litres, two £26.99 tins would cost £53.98. A suitable £40 10L tub would cost £13.98 less. Also price any smaller combination available locally before choosing either option.
Wickes is a useful comparison here because it carries the same paint range in relevant sizes. Check the conditions on a Wickes discount code alongside that basket. If buying from Toolstation, check a Toolstation discount code against your chosen paint and order value. Count a saving only when the checkout accepts it.
Confirm availability before making a journey
At our check, the Toolstation 5L product showed unavailable for delivery, so its price is not a promise of an online delivery order. Check local collection stock and wait for confirmation before travelling. If delivery becomes available, read the current Toolstation delivery terms and compare the final total with collection costs. Buy the quantity your measured job needs, with a sensible allowance for its surface, rather than adding another tub simply to reach a delivery threshold.
