Alibaba.com is a business-to-business marketplace where buyers deal directly with manufacturers and trading companies, mostly in Asia, and it is built for sourcing stock rather than shopping.
How it works
You either search listings or post a Request for Quotation describing what you need and let suppliers come to you, which is usually the faster route for anything non-standard. Listings state a minimum order quantity, and these range from a single unit on some items to several thousand on others. Trade Assurance is the platform's own protection: payment is held and released against agreed delivery and quality terms, and it only applies to orders placed and paid through the platform.
Suppliers and manufacturers are different things
This distinction is worth internalising before you spend anything. A manufacturer makes the goods and can change specifications, materials and packaging. A trading company buys from factories and resells, adding a margin but often handling small orders and mixed shipments that a factory will not touch. Neither is wrong, but you should know which you are talking to, and a supplier who cannot answer basic questions about production is usually the second kind. Verified badges indicate an inspection has taken place; they are a signal, not a guarantee.
What a UK buyer needs to plan for
Always buy samples before a bulk order, and buy them from two or three suppliers so you have something to compare. On import, the landed cost is the number that matters: goods value, freight, import duty at whatever rate applies to that product, and VAT on top of the lot, plus a courier handling fee. Consumer goods sold in Great Britain need UKCA or the relevant conformity marking and the importer carries the legal responsibility for it, not the factory. And branded goods offered far below trade price are a trademark problem you do not want.
