Parallels Desktop solves one specific problem: you own a Mac and something you need only runs on Windows. Instead of buying a second computer, the software runs Windows inside a window on the machine you already have.

What virtualisation actually does

A virtual machine is a complete guest operating system running as an application on the host. Files can be shared between the two, the clipboard works across them, and Windows applications can be set to appear alongside Mac ones rather than inside a visible desktop. Because the guest is isolated, breaking it does not break the Mac, which is also why it is a useful place to test something you do not entirely trust.

Apple silicon changed the rules

On the older Intel architecture, virtualisation ran the same kind of software the processor already spoke. On Apple silicon the Mac runs a different instruction set, so what you install is the version of Windows built for that architecture. Most everyday applications run well, but anything tied to specific legacy hardware or older architecture-dependent software may not. If a single critical application is the reason you are buying, check its compatibility before you pay rather than after.

Memory and disk are the real requirements

A virtual machine takes its memory and storage from the host while it is running. Comfortable use means enough memory for both systems at once, and a virtual disk that grows steadily as the guest fills up. The most common disappointment is not the software but a Mac with too little memory to give the guest a fair share, which makes everything feel slow.

Editions, licensing and the Windows question

The software is sold in a standard edition and higher tiers aimed at developers and businesses, and licensing is offered as an annual subscription or a one-time purchase for a specific major version. A perpetual licence stops receiving major upgrades, which matters because each new macOS release usually requires an updated version. Note also that a Windows licence is a separate purchase from Parallels itself.
