About AbeBooks.co.uk - New, Second-hand, Rare Books & Textbooks

AbeBooks is an online marketplace connecting readers and collectors with independent booksellers. Its listings span new and second-hand books, textbooks, rare editions and collectible material, as well as art and other printed items. This makes it useful for finding an out-of-print title, comparing copies of a familiar book or searching for a particular edition rather than simply choosing the newest release.

The edition matters as much as the title

AbeBooks is particularly useful when your search is more specific than a book title. The author, publisher, publication year and ISBN can help narrow results to the edition you need. For illustrated books, compare the format and language as well, since a paperback reprint may differ from an earlier hardback. If you collect an author or a series, decide which attributes matter before browsing: a reading copy, a signed copy and a first edition are different purchases.

Booksellers describe copies individually

A marketplace listing describes one seller's copy, so its condition notes are worth reading closely. Terms such as an inscription, an ex-library marking or a missing dust jacket can explain a large difference in price. When a detail matters and is not clear, contact the bookseller for clarification or photographs. For an expensive collectible, keep the seller's description with your order records. Buying several books from different sellers can also mean separate parcels and separate delivery charges, even when you place the orders through the same marketplace.

Condition, ISBNs and dispatch locations

Each listing deserves its own review because sellers, conditions and dispatch locations vary. For a textbook, match the ISBN and edition required for your course. For a collectible book, examine the binding, dust jacket, inscriptions and condition notes. A low item price can be outweighed by international postage, while a slightly more expensive copy may be closer to the condition you want.

Marketplace offers and postage

If you find an AbeBooks discount code, check the eligible sellers, books and minimum spend. Marketplace promotions may not cover every listing. Compare the complete delivered cost and seller information, then confirm estimated arrival and return conditions before ordering, especially when a book is needed for a deadline.
