Clara's Corner Organics makes organic skincare for babies and small children, and it came out of a children's play space rather than a laboratory: the founders, Tor and James, started the business after looking properly at what was in the bottles they were using at home.

The range and the packaging

The line is short and deliberately so. Balms and oils lead it, blended around calendula, rose, chamomile and similar botanicals, aimed at dry patches, sore skin and the wind-burnt cheeks of a British winter, alongside washes for bath time and gift sets that pair a balm with an oil. Formulas are organic and the packaging is fully compostable, which is the other half of the point, since children's skincare has traditionally arrived wrapped in a great deal of plastic.

A sensible word about babies' skin

These are cosmetic products for everyday care, not treatments, and nothing here is a substitute for a doctor. Persistent eczema, a rash that spreads, or broken skin that will not settle should be looked at by a GP or health visitor rather than managed with a balm. Botanical ingredients are not automatically gentle either: a plant extract can provoke a reaction just as a synthetic one can, so patch test a small area on the inside of the arm and leave it a day before using anything on a face, particularly on a newborn.
