The metals, and why the price varies so much

The same design often appears in three materials, and the difference is not cosmetic. Solid nine or eighteen carat gold is gold throughout: it does not wear off, any jeweller can repair and resize it, and it costs the most. Gold vermeil is a thick layer of real gold over sterling silver, held to a legal minimum thickness in the UK — better than ordinary plating and far cheaper than solid, but still a surface that wears at knuckles and clasps. Sterling silver is silver. Choosing between them is really a question of how often the piece will be worn and where it sits on the body.

Lab-grown diamonds, plainly

A laboratory-grown diamond is a diamond — the same crystal structure and the same hardness as a mined one, distinguishable only by specialist equipment, and graded on the same colour and clarity scales. What differs is supply and therefore price: they cost markedly less for the same size and quality, which is why they appear so often in everyday pieces. They are not simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials, and they do not hold value the way a mined stone is assumed to — buy one to wear.

Buying and sizing

Have your finger sized in a shop if you can; fingers change size with heat, cold and time of day, and an ornate band cannot always be resized later. For necklaces, note the chain length in centimetres and hold a tape to your own neck rather than guessing from a photograph. Earring fittings matter for pierced ears that react — solid gold and sterling posts suit most people who cannot wear cheaper alloys. Take jewellery off before swimming, the gym and cleaning, because chlorine and household chemicals are what damage plating and dull stones.
