About Dobies
Dobies of Devon has been selling seed and garden plants by post since the nineteenth century and now trades mainly online. Vegetable and flower seed, bulbs, plug plants, fruit and the sundries that go with growing make up the catalogue.
The business is run alongside Suttons. The ranges overlap and the packing is shared, but each site sets its own offers, and a code from one site will be refused by the other. Worth a glance at the address bar before typing anything in.
What they sell
Autumn is bulb season here and the range runs to hundreds of varieties for spring flowering, planted between September and December. Spring brings summer-flowering bulbs, tubers, bedding plugs and vegetable plants ready to go out.
Seed covers the standard kitchen garden crops alongside less usual varieties, and there is a fruit section running from strawberry runners to trained top fruit. Composts, propagators, netting and plant supports fill in the rest.
Growing from what arrives
Everything living is dispatched in its own window rather than when the order is placed, and the product page states when. An order made now for spring bulbs may go out in a fortnight; one for summer bedding will not move until the frosts have gone.
Plug plants are small and need growing on somewhere frost-free before they are planted out. Bare root and dormant stock looks lifeless in the box and usually is not; get it in the ground or heeled into a pot quickly and water it.
Order quantity is where the money is. Seed and plugs drop sharply in price per plant as the pack size goes up, so a shared order with a neighbour beats a code on a small one more often than not.
