More than a mind mapping tool

The classic use is a radial map growing out of a central idea, and that still works for a brainstorm or a set of meeting notes. The software goes further than that, though: the same document can hold a process flow, a project timeline with dependencies and durations, a concept map showing how ideas relate, and a matrix or swimlane view. Branches carry attachments, links, notes, icons and tags, so a map can be the index to a project rather than a picture of one.

Where the desktop and web versions differ

There is a full desktop application for Windows, a Mac version and a lighter browser-based edition, and they are not identical. The Windows build has historically carried the deepest feature set, with the Mac version close behind and the web edition deliberately simpler for quick capture and sharing. If a specific capability is the reason you are buying — a particular export format, a filter, an integration — confirm it exists on the platform you actually work on before paying, rather than assuming parity across all three.

The product is sold in individual, professional and organisation tiers, and how you pay for it, outright or by subscription, affects whether future versions are included. A trial period is offered without a card, which is long enough to build something real rather than to poke at the interface. Before you commit, test the export: push a map out to the file formats you would need if you ever stopped using the software, and check that structure and notes survive the trip.

Fitting it around the tools you already use

Integrations reach into Microsoft Office, Teams, SharePoint and issue trackers, so a map can pull in tasks or push out a document or slide deck instead of being retyped. That is where the time is actually saved. The habit worth forming is the opposite of collecting features: start with one workflow that currently lives in scattered notes, rebuild it once, and only add integrations after that one is genuinely working.
