The Waitrose supermarket chain began when in 1908, Wallace Waite and Arthur Rose opened a small grocery store in Acton in West London. By 1937 the company had grown to 10 stores and was sufficiently successful to attract the attention of the John Lewis Company, who bought the company in the same year. Waitrose has kept growing ever since, and is now a nationwide chain with 344 branches across the country, which makes it the sixth largest grocery chain in the UK. Waitrose was the first supermarket chain to sell organic food and is in procession of a royal warrant to supply groceries and drinks to The Queen as well as Prince Charles. Though Waitrose is perceived as being an upmarket and more expensive supermarket chain, the company has been quick to point out that though their products are indeed of a high quality their pricing is on many levels, on a par with other supermarket chains such as Tesco.
