What an eSIM actually is

An eSIM is a SIM card built into the phone rather than a piece of plastic you push into a tray. Buying one from Airalo means downloading a profile, usually by scanning a code in the app, which sits alongside the SIM you already use. Your normal number keeps working for calls and messages while the travel plan carries the data. Nothing is posted, nothing needs collecting at an airport, and the plan can be installed days before departure.

Local, regional or global

Plans come in three shapes and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake. A local plan covers a single country and is the cheapest per gigabyte.
