What an eSIM actually is

An eSIM is a SIM card built into the phone rather than a piece of plastic you push into a tray. Buying one from Airalo means downloading a profile, usually by scanning a code in the app, which sits alongside the SIM you already use. Your normal number keeps working for calls and messages while the travel plan carries the data. Nothing is posted, nothing needs collecting at an airport, and the plan can be installed days before departure.

Local, regional or global

Plans come in three shapes and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake. A local plan covers a single country and is the cheapest per gigabyte. A regional plan covers a group of countries and suits a trip crossing several borders. A global plan covers a very wide list at a higher price and only makes sense for long multi-continent travel. Work out where you will actually use data before buying, since a regional plan bought for a single-country trip is money wasted.

Check the phone before you buy

Two requirements decide whether this works at all. The handset must support eSIM, which most recent models do but many older and budget ones do not, and it must not be locked to a network. Airalo publishes a compatibility list and it is worth checking your exact model rather than assuming. Most travel plans are data only, so you do not receive a local phone number, which matters if something you use needs to send a text to verify you.

Activation, top-ups and the practical bit

Install the profile while you still have reliable internet at home; the plan itself usually starts counting when it first connects to a network at the destination. Data allowances and validity windows are both stated on the plan, and the clock runs whether you use the data or not. Running low mid-trip is handled by topping up in the app rather than buying a second eSIM.
