Alen makes HEPA air purifiers for homes, sold as a small family of machines sized by room area with a choice of filter to suit the problem you are trying to solve.
One machine, four filters
The BreatheSmart units are separated mainly by the floor area they are rated for, from a bedroom-sized model up to one intended for a large open-plan space. The interesting part is that the same machine takes different filters: a general-purpose one, a version aimed at allergens such as pollen and pet dander, one carrying more carbon for smoke, and one weighted towards odours. Buying the right filter for the actual complaint matters more than buying a bigger machine. There is also a slim tower model where floor space is tight.
Sizing by air changes, not by square footage alone
A coverage figure printed on a box assumes a standard ceiling height and one air change an hour, which is not enough if someone in the house has hay fever or asthma. For a bedroom you want the machine to turn the room's air over several times an hour, which usually means choosing a unit rated for a larger area than the room and running it on a lower, quieter speed. That combination gives you clean air and a machine you can sleep next to, which is the whole point of buying one for a bedroom.
The real cost is the filters
Filter life depends on the filter type and on how dirty the air is, and the replacement schedule is measured in months rather than years. Work out the yearly filter cost before choosing a model, because over a machine's life it comfortably exceeds the purchase price. A subscription reduces that cost a little and removes the risk of running a clogged filter for months. Vacuum the pre-filter periodically; it is the cheapest maintenance there is and it extends the life of the expensive part behind it.
What a purifier cannot fix
A purifier removes particles from air that passes through it. It does not remove the source, it does not dry out damp, and it will not solve mould growing behind furniture. If there is a smell of damp, the answer is ventilation and finding the water, not a filter. Purifiers also do nothing for carbon monoxide, which needs its own alarm. Keep doors closed in the room being treated, and do not expect one unit to handle a whole house.
