Four different technologies, four different jobs

Radio frequency warms the deeper layers of skin to encourage collagen, and is the one marketed for firmness around the jaw and eyes. LED uses specific wavelengths — red generally aimed at ageing, blue at blemish-causing bacteria — with no heat involved. Microcurrent works on facial muscles for a short-lived lifting effect. IPL targets hair by pigment. They are not interchangeable, and a device that does several of them at once does none of them as strongly as a dedicated unit. Decide which problem you are actually solving first.

Honest expectations for a home device

Home units are deliberately limited in power compared with what a clinic uses, which is what makes them safe to sell for unsupervised use and also what caps the result. Changes are gradual and modest, they take consistent use over months rather than a fortnight, and they stop when you stop. Nothing in this category is a substitute for a medical or clinic procedure, and none of it treats a skin condition. Before-and-after photography in this market is unreliable — lighting, angle and expression account for a great deal of it.

Safety, and who should not use these

This matters more than the specification. Do not use energy-based devices over an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker, over metal implants or fillers in the treatment area, on broken or infected skin, or during pregnancy without medical advice. IPL works by heating pigment, so it does not work on grey, red or very fair hair, should not be used over tattoos or moles, and should not be used on recently tanned skin. Photosensitising medication — some antibiotics, acne treatments and herbal products among them — is a reason to ask a pharmacist first. Eye protection with LED and IPL is not optional.

Getting value out of one you have bought

Follow the stated frequency rather than doubling it, use the conductive gel where the instructions call for it, and keep to one device at a time so you can tell whether it is doing anything. Photograph your skin in the same light, at the same time of day, once a fortnight — that is the only honest way to judge. Check what consumables or replacement parts the model needs and whether they are still sold, and confirm the plug and voltage before ordering.
