Divan or bedstead

A divan is an upholstered base that the mattress sits on, usually on castors, often with drawers built in. It gives maximum storage, takes up no more floor space than the mattress, and carries no headboard unless you buy one.

A bedstead is a frame with slats, in wood or metal. It looks like furniture, lets air circulate under the mattress, and wastes a few inches of floor space around the edges.

Neither is better. Storage decides it in a small room; appearance decides it in a large one.

Sprung slats flex and add comfort; solid slats are firmer and support foam mattresses better. The gap between slats matters most: too wide and a foam mattress sags between them, and most manufacturers void the guarantee above a stated gap.

On a storage divan, check which side the drawers open and measure the clearance to the wall and wardrobe. A two-drawer base against the wrong wall is a base with no drawers.

British bed sizes

A UK double is narrower than most people expect, and a king is longer as well as wider. Continental sizes differ again, so bedding bought abroad rarely fits a British bed properly.

If either sleeper is over six foot, look at the length before the width. An extra-long option solves more complaints than a wider mattress does.
