Buying gear that will be allowed in competition

This is the part worth checking first. Training gear and competition gear are not always the same thing: a federation will specify the colour, the type and sometimes the approved maker of gloves, pads and headguards, and dipped foam sparring gear that is fine in the club may not be permitted at a tournament. Read your association's rules, or ask your instructor, before spending on a set you intend to compete in. The same applies to gi weight and colour in BJJ.

Sizing and looking after it

Uniform sizes go by height and build rather than by a clothing size, and cotton gis shrink on the first hot wash, which is why the charts usually tell you to buy a size that starts slightly long. Wash a gi cold and hang it to dry. For gloves and pads, air them after every session rather than sealing them into a kit bag — the smell that makes people replace equipment early is bacteria, not wear. A mouthguard is the cheapest protective item you will buy and the one most often skipped; do not skip it.
