Dollar is a car rental brand with several hundred pick-up points, concentrated at airports and city centres, and a fleet organised into the usual size bands from mini upwards.

The fleet, in categories

Bookings are made by category rather than by model: mini, economy, compact and intermediate cover the everyday range, with SUVs and electric vehicles available at many locations. As with any rental company, the photograph is illustrative and you receive a car from the category booked. Choose on passengers and luggage rather than on the pictured badge, and if you are booking an electric car, check the charging arrangements at the pick-up point and what state of charge is expected on return.

Age, licence and the card in your hand

The usual requirement is that the driver is at least twenty-five and has held a clean licence for at least a year before pick-up, with surcharges applied to younger drivers and the exact rules varying by destination. The booking must be in the main driver's name, and that driver must present their own credit card at the desk for the deposit and guarantee. A card in someone else's name, or a debit card where credit is required, is the classic way to lose a booking at the counter.

Fuel, and the charge that catches people

Cars are supplied with a full tank and expected back full. Fuel can be bought from the rental company at the start, but there is no refund for what you do not use, so prepaying only makes sense if you are certain you will run the tank down. Returning the car short of full triggers a refuelling charge at the company's own rate, which is always higher than a filling station.

Prepaid or pay at the desk

The two booking types behave differently if plans change. Prepaid reservations can generally be cancelled for a full refund up to midnight two days before pick-up, while pay-on-arrival bookings can be cancelled free until the collection day itself. If the trip is at all uncertain, that flexibility is usually worth more than the prepay saving.
