The four kinds of course

Traffic school is the one taken after a ticket, where a court or the DMV has said a course will keep the citation off the record. Defensive driving covers the same ground for a state requirement or an employer. The insurance discount course is voluntary: carriers in a number of states knock a percentage off the premium for completing one, and it can usually be repeated every few years. Driver's education is for a learner working towards a permit or a first licence.

Check the state before you pay

This is the part that matters most. Rules are set state by state and sometimes court by court, so a course approved in one place is not automatically accepted in another. If a ticket is involved, the court or DMV notice will say which course type is required and by what date. Choose the course for that state and that purpose on the site, and if a specific court is named, confirm the course is on its approved list. An unapproved course completed on time is still an unapproved course.

Everything is done online in short modules that can be started and stopped, on a phone or a computer, so it fits around a working week rather than a Saturday in a classroom. At the end a certificate is issued, and depending on the state it is either filed for you or sent to you to pass on to the court, the DMV or your insurer. Keep a copy either way.
