The range

The bikes are grouped by wheel size and use. The D3F is the smallest, on 14-inch wheels, and folds down small enough for a hallway or a car boot. The A1F on 16-inch wheels and the T1 on 20-inch sit in the middle, the T1 adding a torque sensor and a magnesium alloy frame. The C6 is a 26-inch city bike for people who want a normal riding position, and there are fat-tyre and step-through models for rougher ground and easier mounting.

The UK law you need to know before buying

This is the section that matters most. In Britain an electric bike is legal on roads and cycle paths only if it is an EAPC: the motor is rated no more than 250 watts, the assistance stops at 15.5 miles per hour, and the motor only helps while you are pedalling. Ride one of those and there is no licence, no tax, no insurance and no registration, from age fourteen. A bike whose motor is more powerful, or that drives you along without pedalling beyond a walking-pace start, is legally a motor vehicle — and since it cannot normally be registered, it can only be used on private land with permission. Most of the DYU range is the 250-watt EAPC type; anything advertised with a much higher peak wattage is not, whatever the listing implies.

Battery and range in practice

Advertised range is measured in ideal conditions — flat ground, light rider, lowest assistance level. Real figures on British hills with a headwind are usually well short of it, so treat the number as a maximum rather than a promise. Lithium batteries prefer to be stored around half charged in a cool place rather than left flat or on the charger for months, and they should be charged where a fire would not trap anyone: not in a hallway, not overnight while everyone sleeps, and only with the charger supplied.
