About Expedia UK

One of the largest travel platforms in the world, selling accommodation, flights, car hire, activities and packages, with the UK site trading under British consumer rules.

It is an intermediary rather than an airline or a hotel. What it adds is inventory in one place and the ability to combine elements into a single booking.

Why a package can be safer than separate bookings

When a flight and accommodation are bought together as a package, the booking generally falls under UK package travel protection. That means the organiser is responsible for the whole trip, and flight-inclusive packages are covered by the ATOL scheme if the seller fails.

Book the same flight and hotel separately and you have two unrelated contracts. If the airline cancels, the hotel is still your problem and your money.

The price difference between the two routes is often small. The protection difference is not.

Reading the booking properly

Check whether the rate is prepaid or pay-at-property, and whether cancellation is free and until when, in the property's local time.

Check what the flight fare includes. A package price built on a basic economy fare may carry hand luggage only, and adding a case later costs more than choosing a better fare at the outset.

Save the confirmation and the ATOL certificate if one is issued. It is the document that matters if anything goes wrong.

When plans change

A booking made through a platform is amended through that platform. Hotels and airlines routinely decline to change a third-party reservation directly, so keep the reference and the platform's contact route.

Take a screenshot of the terms at the time of booking, because the page you agreed to is not the page you will see later.

Using an Expedia discount code

Codes typically apply to the hotel element rather than the flight, and to prepaid rates rather than pay-on-arrival ones. Enter it before the payment step and confirm the total has moved, since on a package the reduction is easy to miss.
