Forest Holidays rents log cabins inside working forests across Britain. The proposition is deliberately narrow: no resort complex, no entertainment programme, just a cabin among the trees with a hot tub on the deck.

Thirteen forests, and they are not interchangeable

Locations run from Sherwood and the Forest of Dean through Cornwall, Norfolk and Cheshire to Argyll, Strathyre and Glentress in Scotland, and Beddgelert and Garwnant in Wales. The landscape differs enormously between them, and so does what is within driving distance, so it is worth choosing on the surrounding area rather than on the cabin photographs, which look broadly similar everywhere.

Cabin types and what comes with them

Cabins range from small units for two up to larger lodges and treehouses sleeping as many as ten. Hot tubs on private decks are the signature feature, with log burners, covered outdoor seating and bunk rooms common across the range. Dog-friendly cabins are available at most sites, and are worth booking early because they sell out first. These are self-catering, so a food shop or the site's own delivery service needs planning before arrival.

What you can add to a stay

Ranger-led activities, bike hire, spa treatments and in-cabin dining can be booked alongside the cabin, and the popular ones fill up well before arrival rather than on the day. For a family break, booking one or two activities in advance and leaving the rest of the time loose tends to work better than arriving with no plan at all.

Booking, deposits and timing

Stays can be held with a small deposit and paid in instalments, which spreads the cost of what is not an inexpensive break. Prices move sharply with school holidays and with midweek versus weekend, and the same cabin in the same forest can differ substantially between a Monday and a Friday arrival. If your dates are flexible, check a midweek stay before assuming a code is the only saving available. Read the cancellation terms attached to your specific booking rather than assuming one policy covers everything.
