About HPI Check

HPI is the long-established British vehicle history check. It searches the finance, insurance, police and mileage databases against a registration and reports what is recorded against that vehicle.
It is the check most often named by name in this country, and the reason is the data behind it rather than the report layout.

What the check reports

Outstanding finance, whether the vehicle has been recorded as stolen, whether it has been written off and to what category, plate and colour changes, mileage discrepancies from recorded readings, import and export records and previous keeper counts.

Why it matters before money changes hands

Outstanding finance is the one that costs people their car. If a vehicle is still on a finance agreement, the finance company retains an interest in it, and a private buyer can lose the car without compensation even having paid in good faith. A check is a fraction of that risk.
A write-off category tells you what happened and what it means for insurance and resale. Some categories are perfectly saleable when properly repaired and some are not, and either way the buyer should know before negotiating rather than after.
Check the car and the paperwork against the report: registration, chassis number and engine number should all match the V5C, and the V5C itself should be checked for the right address and issue history. A check reports what is recorded and cannot tell you whether a car has been well maintained, so it sits alongside a proper inspection rather than replacing one.
