Krystal is a Mexican hotel group with properties along both coasts and in the major cities, run under three brands that suit quite different trips.

The three brands

Krystal Grand is the upper tier, built around all-inclusive stays with speciality restaurants and premium drinks included. Krystal Hotels & Resorts is the family line, with the pools and children's programmes that implies alongside quieter areas for adults. Krystal Urban is the city and business line, sized and priced for a work trip rather than a fortnight by the sea. All-inclusive or room only

Rates come both ways, and the choice is worth making deliberately rather than by habit. All-inclusive earns its money at a beach resort where leaving the grounds for every meal is inconvenient, and where a family will otherwise buy four lunches and a stack of drinks each day. It earns much less in a city such as Mexico City or Guadalajara, where the food outside the hotel is the reason to be there. Booking sensibly for Mexico

Check the season: the Caribbean coast has a hurricane season running through late summer and autumn, and cheaper rates in those months carry that risk, so flexible cancellation is worth more then than in February. Confirm what the resort fee and local taxes add, since they are commonly quoted separately. If you are travelling from the UK, look at the transfer time from the airport to the property before booking — some resorts are an hour or more from Cancun airport, which matters after a ten-hour flight.
