Medical Travel Compared is a UK comparison site for travel insurance where a pre-existing medical condition is part of the picture, and a discount code lowers a premium that is usually higher than a standard policy for exactly that reason.

What the site does

Rather than selling one insurer's product, it runs your details past a panel of specialist providers and returns quotes you can compare side by side. The distinction that matters is medical screening: you declare your conditions, medications and recent treatment through a questionnaire, and the quotes come back priced for those conditions rather than excluding them. Cover runs from single trip and annual multi-trip to cruise and longer-stay policies, with the usual destination bands. The service is provided by an FCA-regulated firm, which you can verify on the Financial Services Register using the reference number shown on the site.

Declaring conditions properly

This is the whole point, and it is where claims are lost. Declare every condition you have been diagnosed with, investigated for, prescribed medication for or treated for within the period the questionnaire asks about — including conditions you consider resolved, and anything you are waiting to see a specialist about. An undeclared condition does not just void a claim connected to it; depending on the policy it can affect the whole policy. If your health changes after you buy, tell the insurer before you travel, because cover is priced on the facts at the time it was sold.

Reading a quote beyond the headline price

Compare the medical and repatriation limit first; it is the number the policy exists for, and repatriation by air ambulance is what makes an overseas illness catastrophically expensive. Then check the excess and whether it applies per person per section, the cancellation limit against what your trip actually cost, and the baggage and delay cover, usually the least important part despite being the most advertised. For cruises, look specifically for cruise cover, and check the policy covers the activities you plan.

Timing, and using your code

Buy the policy when you book the trip, not before you fly. Cancellation cover starts from the purchase date, so the weeks between booking and departure are only covered if the policy already exists. Enter your code in the field shown before completing payment on the chosen policy and confirm the premium changes; codes apply to the site's own booking process, are usually one per policy, and do not stack with other offers. Read the policy wording before buying, not after.
