Foam, hybrid and which one suits you

An all-foam mattress moulds closely, absorbs movement almost completely and suits side sleepers and anyone woken by a restless partner. A hybrid puts foam comfort layers over a pocket-spring core, which gives more support underneath, more airflow and an easier time getting in and out. The cooling versions use open-cell or gel-infused foam to move heat away, which is worth paying attention to if you sleep hot, because heat retention is the complaint people most often have about memory foam.

Firmness is about your weight and your position

The label on the box is not a universal scale. Side sleepers usually want something softer, so the shoulder and hip can sink and the spine stays straight. Back and front sleepers usually want firmer, so the hips are not left low. Heavier sleepers compress any mattress more and generally need to go a step firmer than the description suggests; lighter sleepers often find a firm mattress never gives at all.
