OBDeleven is a small Bluetooth dongle that plugs into a car's diagnostic port and turns a phone into a scanner and, on supported cars, a coding tool.

Reading faults and changing settings are two different things

The first job is diagnosis: scanning the control units, reading and clearing fault codes and watching live sensor data. That works across cars using the standard bus protocol and is included with the device. The second job is coding — changing factory settings that are already in the car's software but switched off, such as how the indicators behave, whether the doors lock at speed or what the displays show. Coding depth depends heavily on the manufacturer, and the tool has deeper access on some groups than others.

One-click apps versus doing it by hand

The one-click apps are prepared changes: pick the car, pick the tweak, let the app write it. They are the sensible route for most owners because they avoid typing values into a control unit. Manual coding gives full access for people who know what they are doing, which is where the real risk lives. Before changing anything, back up the original values — the tool will show them — and write them down somewhere off the phone. A change you can undo is a different thing from a change you cannot.

Credits, plans and what you are actually paying for

The device buys you diagnostics. Beyond that, one-click apps are paid for either with credits bought in the app or through a subscription that includes them, and manual coding sits behind the higher tier on supported cars. Work out which side you are on before paying: someone who wants to read a fault code once a year needs no subscription at all, and someone who is setting up a newly bought car may want a month of the top tier and nothing after.

Warranty, batteries and the sensible way to use it

Two practical warnings. Changes made to a car's software can be visible to a dealer and can affect a warranty or a lease agreement, so check before altering anything on a car you do not own outright. And coding draws power with the engine off: a weak battery dropping voltage mid-write is how control units get corrupted, so do this with a healthy battery or a charger connected. Unplug the dongle when you have finished rather than leaving it in the port, and confirm your model year is supported before buying.
