What the range covers

Wax candles come in several formats: three-wick jars for a room, single jars, pillars and tealights, plus the GloLite line that is designed to glow through the wax rather than only at the flame. For anyone who does not want an open flame there are wax melts with electric and tealight warmers, room sprays and fragrance oils. Around the candles sit holders, lanterns and decorative pieces, and there is a small body care range of hand creams and lotions.

Getting a candle to burn properly

Two habits make a candle last twice as long. The first burn should run until the melt pool reaches the edge of the jar, which usually takes a couple of hours on a wide three-wick; put it out early and the wax sets with a rim that never melts afterwards, so the candle tunnels down the middle and wastes most of itself. The second habit is trimming the wick to about five millimetres before each light, which stops the soot and the flickering that blackens the glass.

Sensible safety

Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from curtains, and stop burning when about a centimetre of wax is left, since the glass gets hot from below once the wax is gone. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets, and be careful with anything sitting on a shelf where a cat can knock it. Wax warmers are a good answer in a house where an open flame is not sensible, and they give the same scent throw without a naked flame.

Fragrance strength is worth matching to the room rather than buying the biggest jar available. A three-wick in a small bedroom quickly becomes overpowering, while a single jar in an open-plan kitchen and living space barely registers, and the honest fix is more candles spread around a large room instead of one very strong one. Warmers behave the same way, so start with a single melt and add a second only if the scent is not reaching.
