Skillshare is a subscription to a library of creative classes rather than a shop selling individual courses. One membership opens everything, which changes how you use it.

What is actually taught

The catalogue runs to tens of thousands of classes weighted heavily towards creative work: illustration, graphic design, animation, photography, motion graphics, interface design, video and film, music, crafts, plus the business side of freelancing and marketing. Instructors are working practitioners rather than academics, so the teaching tends to be practical and specific. It is a good fit for learning a tool or a technique and a poor fit for a structured qualification in a formal subject.

Classes are built around a project

Most classes end with something you make rather than a test you pass. Finished projects can be posted for feedback from other students, and that community response is a large part of the value for people learning alone. Classes are short by design, frequently under an hour in total, split into segments you can work through over several evenings.

Certificates, and what they are worth

Completing a class earns a certificate, and it is worth being clear about what that means. It records that you finished the class. It is not an accredited qualification and carries no formal academic standing. For a creative field that is largely beside the point, since the portfolio piece you made during the class is the thing an employer or client will actually look at.

How the membership works

Access is sold as a subscription, usually annual, often with a trial period at the start. Offline downloads are supported in the mobile apps, which suits a commute. Two things to check before entering a code: the date the trial converts to a paid term, and the renewal rate as opposed to the introductory one. Cancelling is done from the account page, and it stops the next renewal rather than cutting off access on the spot.
