Wyzant is a marketplace for private tutoring rather than a tutoring company, connecting learners with independent tutors across several hundred subjects.
How the marketplace works
Tutors write their own profiles, set their own hourly rate and choose whether they teach online, in person or both. You search by subject, read profiles and reviews, message a shortlist about what you actually need, and book. Lessons online run in the platform's own classroom with a shared whiteboard and screen sharing, which matters more than it sounds: a maths session without a shared workspace is two people describing equations to each other. Subjects run well beyond school work into languages, music, programming and test preparation.
Picking a tutor is picking a person, not a CV
The strongest signal in a profile is not the university named at the top. It is the reviews from students at the same level as yours, the number of hours actually taught, and how the tutor answers your first message. Say plainly what is going wrong — a specific topic, an exam date, a confidence problem — and see who responds to that rather than sending a template. A first hour with a new tutor is covered by the platform's match guarantee, so trying two people costs less than persevering with a poor fit.
What the rate does and does not include
Rates vary widely because tutors set them, and the highest is not reliably the best. Ask what happens outside the lesson: whether the tutor sets work between sessions, how much preparation is included, and what the cancellation window is. Payment runs through the platform rather than directly to the tutor, which is the right way round — it keeps a record and gives you somewhere to go if a session does not happen. Agreeing to pay a tutor outside the system removes both.
Getting value out of the hours you buy
Tutoring works when it is aimed. Turn up with the specific questions, the marked homework or the past paper, rather than asking someone to teach a whole subject again from the start. Weekly and short beats monthly and long, particularly for a child. And set an end point: agree with the tutor what improvement looks like and when you will review it, so the arrangement does not quietly become a standing expense that nobody is measuring.
