Thrifty México is the Mexican arm of the Thrifty rental brand, hiring cars, SUVs and vans from airport and city branches across the country.

The fleet and the branches

Vehicles range from small economy cars for a city stay through mid-size saloons and SUVs to vans and pickups for a family or a long drive with luggage. Branches cluster around the airports travellers actually arrive at — Cancun, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and others — with city offices alongside. Booking is done online with collection at the desk.

The insurance rule that catches every foreign visitor

This is the most important thing on this page. Mexican law requires third-party liability cover on every rental vehicle, and it must be issued by a Mexican insurer. Your credit card's rental benefit does not satisfy it, and neither does a travel policy bought at home — those cover damage to the car you are driving, not injury or damage you cause to other people. The consequence is simple: the liability cover will be added at the counter whatever you have arranged elsewhere, and it is not optional. A headline daily rate that looks impossibly cheap is one that has not included it yet.

Booking without a surprise at the desk

Look for a quote that states liability cover is included rather than optional, and take a screenshot of the final figure before you pay. Expect a deposit held on a credit card in the main driver's name — a debit card is often refused. Collision damage waiver remains a separate decision with its own excess; here your card benefit may genuinely help, so check what it covers before buying the counter product. Photograph every panel, the wheels and the fuel gauge before leaving, and again on return. Bring your driving licence and passport, and check whether the branch wants an international driving permit.
