Understanding the fits

This is where a first order goes right or wrong. Classic is the traditional generous cut, made to be worn with a suit and to allow movement; Contemporary is trimmed through the body for a closer line; Casual is softer, often with a different collar and a shorter tail for wearing untucked. The collar size is the measurement that matters most and should be taken around the neck with a finger's room, not guessed from your last shirt. If you are between sizes, the larger collar with the sleeve altered is the more comfortable answer.

Making good shirts last

Cotton shirts of this quality reward a little care. Wash at forty rather than sixty, use less detergent than the bottle suggests, and never bleach a white shirt — it yellows the fibres over time and weakens the collar. Undo the collar and cuff buttons before washing. Iron slightly damp, collar first, then cuffs, then the body, and hang the shirt to finish cooling rather than folding it warm. Collar stays should come out before washing and go back in afterwards; losing them is the usual reason a good collar starts to curl.
