Hughes is one of the older electrical retailers in Britain, built out of East Anglia and still operating shops alongside the website. Where it differs from the pure-play online sellers is that buying is not the only option it offers.
The company rents appliances as well as selling them, and it sells graded and refurbished stock through a separate channel. For anyone furnishing a rented flat or replacing a broken machine on short notice, those routes can beat a purchase outright.
What they sell
Large appliances across the board: washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, fridges and freezers, cookers and ovens, in freestanding and integrated versions.
Televisions and audio make up the other half, with the major panel brands running through the current model years. Small kitchen appliances, vacuums and personal care fill in beneath, and installation and disposal services are sold alongside the machines.
Buy, rent or refurbished
Three routes, three different situations. Buying suits a machine you expect to keep for a decade. Renting spreads the cost and usually includes servicing and breakdown cover, which suits a temporary home or anyone who wants the repair problem to belong to somebody else.
Graded stock is the third: machines with cosmetic marks or returned packaging, sold at a reduction with a shorter warranty. On an appliance destined for a garage or a utility room, a scratch on the side panel is worth the saving. On a fridge standing in a kitchen, it may not be.
