About Minerva
Minerva is a British fabric and haberdashery retailer based in Lancashire, trading for years as Minerva Crafts before shortening the name. It sells to home dressmakers rather than to industry.
The range is unusually deep for an online fabric shop, and the site carries a large community side — projects, patterns and makers — which is where most of its customers come from.
What they stock
Dressmaking fabrics by the metre across cotton, jersey, viscose, linen, wool and specialist cloth, sewing patterns from the main pattern houses, haberdashery from zips and thread to buttons and interfacing, yarn and knitting supplies, and sewing machines with their accessories.
End-of-line and deadstock fabric appears regularly, including ex-designer cloth sold at a fraction of its original price, and that stock is one-off: when a roll goes, it is gone.
Buying fabric online
Read the composition, the width and the weight together. A pattern's fabric requirement assumes a width — usually 112 or 150 centimetres — and buying the same metreage in the narrower width leaves you short. Weight in grams per square metre tells you how the cloth will hang far better than the photograph does.
Order a swatch when the colour or handle matters. Screens misrepresent colour badly on saturated dyes, and drape is impossible to judge from an image; a swatch costs a fraction of the fabric.
Buy the whole project's fabric in one order. Dye lots vary between rolls, and running short means either a visible mismatch or starting again.
Add allowance for pattern matching, pre-washing shrinkage and, on directional prints or napped fabric, for cutting all pieces the same way up. Fifteen per cent extra is a sensible habit on anything patterned.
Cut fabric is made to order and cannot normally be returned for a change of mind, which makes the swatch the cheap insurance.
