Boxing, grappling and the gear in between

The boxing side runs from training gloves and sparring gloves to punch bags, floor-to-ceiling balls, focus pads and freestanding stands. The MMA range adds grappling gloves, shin guards, shorts and rash guards. Around both sits the protective equipment that clubs insist on: hand wraps, head guards, gum shields, groin protection and body protectors. The fitness catalogue covers weightlifting belts, lifting straps, gym gloves, resistance bands, yoga mats and sandbags, so a home gym can be equipped in one order.

Glove weight is not glove size

The number on a boxing glove is its weight in ounces, and it describes how much padding is between your knuckles and whatever you hit, not how big your hand is. Heavier gloves protect both people during sparring, lighter ones are for bag and pad work, and most clubs set a minimum weight for sparring by body weight. Ask your coach before ordering rather than after. Hand wraps are not optional underneath: they hold the small bones of the hand together, and gloves worn without them fit loosely and protect less.

Approvals, materials and what wears out first

Equipment carrying the approval of a governing body has been checked against that body's specification, which matters if you intend to compete under its rules rather than only train. Elsewhere in the range, look at the material and the stitching rather than the logo. The parts that fail first are predictable: bag seams, glove linings and the velcro on wraps. Airing gloves out after every session, rather than zipping them into a damp bag, extends their life more than anything you can buy.

Setting up a bag at home without damaging the house

A hanging bag exerts far more force on a ceiling joist than its static weight suggests, and a fixing into plasterboard will eventually come down. Mount into structural timber or use a freestanding base filled to the recommended weight. Leave clear swing space in every direction, put something under the base on a hard floor, and check that the neighbours below are not sharing the impact with you.
