Choosing a screen without overpaying

Panel type matters more than the number of pixels for most rooms. OLED gives true blacks and is the better choice for a dark room and for film; QLED and other LED sets go brighter and cope better with a sunny lounge. Beyond a certain point resolution stops being visible: 8K makes no practical difference at normal viewing distances and there is very little to watch in it. Measure the wall and the distance you sit at before choosing a size, and remember that a soundbar improves a modern television more than an upgrade in panel usually does, because thin sets have nowhere to put decent speakers.

Buying a large appliance

Measure the aperture — height, width and depth — and the route into the kitchen before ordering, and check whether an integrated or freestanding model is what your kitchen actually takes. Ask what the delivery includes: kerbside, into the room, connection, and removal of the old machine are separate things and often separately priced. For washing machines the spin speed and the noise rating matter in a flat, and the energy label is worth reading properly, since a cheaper machine run daily for ten years is not cheaper. Keep the paperwork for the manufacturer's warranty.
