Momme is the number that matters

Silk is graded by momme, a weight measure, and it tells you more than any adjective on the listing. Lightweight silk drapes beautifully and wears through faster; heavier silk is more opaque, more durable and more expensive. Bedding is commonly offered across a range of weights, and the middle of that range is the sensible default for pillowcases you will wash weekly — the lightest looks lovely and does not survive a laundry routine. For clothing, heavier weights hang better and show less.

Why people buy a silk pillowcase

The sensible claims are about friction rather than magic. A smooth surface pulls less at hair overnight, which helps with frizz and breakage, particularly for curly or fine hair, and creases the face less than cotton. It is also less absorbent, so it takes less moisture out of skin and hair — which is the same reason it needs washing as often as any other pillowcase, because oils sit on the surface instead of soaking in. What it will not do is change your skin or regrow hair, and any listing that says otherwise is overselling.

Washing silk without ruining it

Silk is protein, so treat it like wool rather than like cotton. Hand wash or use a delicates bag on a cold, gentle cycle with a detergent made for silk or wool — biological detergent contains enzymes that digest protein and will damage the fibre. No bleach, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer, no wringing. Roll in a towel to take out water, dry flat or on a hanger away from direct sun and radiators, and iron on the lowest setting on the reverse while slightly damp. Perfume and hairspray mark silk, so dress last.

Sizing, and what to check before ordering

Read the garment measurements rather than the letter size, because cut varies and silk has almost no stretch, so a fit that is slightly tight stays tight. For bedding, check the pillowcase dimensions against your own pillows rather than assuming a standard, since sizes differ between countries. Look for an OEKO-TEX or equivalent certification if chemical residues matter to you, and keep the packaging until you have inspected the seams — silk is unforgiving of poor stitching and it shows immediately at the shoulders and the hem.
