About The Skin Deep

The Skin Deep sells conversation card games — decks of questions designed to move a conversation past small talk — and grew out of {THE AND}, the filmed interview series the company is known for.

What is in the box

Decks are sorted by who is playing. There are versions for couples, split between people who are dating and people who have been together for years, and separate decks for friends, family, colleagues and for using alone. Bundles combine several, and there are digital versions for people in different places. Each deck is a stack of question cards taken in turn, with no scoring and no winner — the game is the conversation.

What they are good for

The honest case for these is that most people are out of practice at asking each other real questions, and a card removes the awkwardness of being the one who raised it. They work well on a long evening, on a car journey, at a table with family who see each other twice a year, or with a partner where the conversation has flattened into logistics. They also make a gift that is easy to give and hard to get wrong, which is why the couples and family decks sell as presents.

Playing them well

Two things make the difference. Agree beforehand that anyone can skip a card without explaining why — the decks go deep, and consent to the depth is what keeps it pleasant rather than uncomfortable. And answer properly rather than briefly; the person opposite is going to match whatever length you set. Put phones away. If a question lands somewhere painful, that is a moment to stay with each other rather than to reach for the next card. These are conversation games, not therapy, and if something surfaces that needs more than an evening, it deserves a professional rather than another deck.
