Skate shoes: vulcanised or cupsole

A vulcanised sole is glued and cured to the upper, making it thin, flexible and good for board feel, and it is the construction that wears through fastest at the ollie area. A cupsole is a moulded unit stitched or bonded on, which is stiffer, more cushioned and lasts considerably longer. Neither is better in the abstract: a street skater who wants feel picks one and someone who wants the shoes to survive a summer picks the other. Suede uppers outlast canvas on the toe by a wide margin.

Boardshorts and swim shorts are different garments

Boardshorts are longer, have no mesh liner and are designed to be worn over something or against skin under a wetsuit, with a lace-up fly that does not come undone in surf. Swim shorts are shorter, elasticated and lined. Buying boardshorts expecting a liner is the usual disappointment. Check the inside leg length, because the difference between a mid-thigh and a knee-length pair is considerable.

Wetsuit thickness and British water

A wetsuit is described by two numbers in millimetres, the thicker figure for the torso and the thinner for the limbs. For British water a three by two suit covers late spring to early autumn, while winter needs four by three or five by four with a hood, boots and gloves. Fit matters more than thickness: a suit that is loose flushes cold water through and a thick loose suit is colder than a thin tight one.

Brand sizing does not travel

The labels here come from several countries and size to their own standards, with American skate brands running generous and European surf brands running lean. Use the measurements on the individual listing, and for a hooded top check the body length as well as the chest.
