Frames first, lenses second

The frame range is the draw: cat eye, rectangle, square, butterfly, round and aviator shapes grouped into style collections rather than by material. Lenses are then configured on top — single vision, progressive, blue-light filtering, photochromic lenses that darken outdoors, polarised sun lenses and custom tints, with the usual anti-reflective and scratch coatings. Because the frame and the lens are priced separately, the number on the frame is rarely what you pay, and it is worth building a full basket before comparing with anywhere else.

What you need before you can order

Two things: a current prescription and your pupillary distance. The prescription comes from an eye test and you are entitled to a copy of it; it lists sphere, cylinder, axis and, for reading or progressive lenses, an addition. Pupillary distance is the gap between the centres of your pupils in millimetres, and it is what centres the lens in front of your eye. Opticians do not always print it, but they can measure it, and a friend with a ruler is a poor substitute — a PD that is a few millimetres out causes eye strain and headaches that people usually blame on the prescription.

An online order is not an eye test

This is the part worth being firm about. An eye test is a health check as well as a measurement: it can pick up glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic changes and retinal problems long before you notice symptoms. Buying frames online does not replace it, and a prescription older than about two years should not be used. If your vision has changed suddenly, you are seeing flashes or floaters, or one eye has got worse on its own, that is an appointment rather than an order. Progressive lenses in particular benefit from proper fitting measurements.

Getting the fit right and using the returns window

The measurement that decides whether a frame suits you is the total width across the front and the bridge width, both usually printed on the inside arm of a pair you already own. Compare those numbers rather than trusting a photograph or a virtual try-on, which is useful for style and useless for scale. When the glasses arrive, wear them properly for a few days before judging — new prescriptions and new frame shapes both take adjustment — but do it inside the returns window, and have the arms adjusted by an optician rather than bending them yourself.
