What the machines do

The line-up centres on all-in-one pour-over brewers. A conical burr grinder, a scale, a heating system and a shower head that moves over the bed of coffee are combined so the machine grinds the beans, blooms them, and pours in stages according to a recipe rather than in one continuous stream. The premise is repeatability: a pour-over made properly by hand is excellent and slightly different every time, while the machine executes the same recipe each morning. Pods versus your own beans

This decision determines what the machine costs you over time. The xPod carries a recipe as well as the coffee, so the machine brews to the roaster's intended parameters — convenient, and the way to try many roasters without buying many bags. But pods are the expensive way to drink coffee per cup, and the machines also accept your own whole beans, with grind size, dose, water temperature and pour schedule set manually. If you already buy from a local roaster, work out the cost per cup both ways first.

Whether it is worth it

Be honest about what you are buying. If you currently drink instant or supermarket pre-ground, the single biggest improvement is fresh beans ground at the moment of brewing, and a decent hand grinder and a cheap dripper deliver most of that for a fraction of the price. What an automated brewer buys is consistency and time in the morning. It is a filter-coffee machine, not an espresso machine — it will not make a flat white — so if milk drinks are what you want, this is the wrong category.

Delivery, power and using your code
