Getting the fitment right

This is where money is wasted in this category. A head unit is sold for a specific make, model, year range and sometimes a specific trim, because the dashboard aperture, the wiring loom and the CAN bus module differ between them. Use the shop-by-vehicle route rather than choosing by screen size, and check the year carefully — a facelift model mid-generation frequently uses a different unit. Look at whether the listing includes the fascia adapter and the loom for your car, or whether those are separate purchases, since a unit alone will not go in.

Think about what the original stereo is doing beyond playing music. If your car routes steering wheel controls, parking sensors, a reversing camera or climate display through the factory screen, you need the interface that keeps those working, and that is a question to ask before buying rather than after. Fitting is within reach of a competent DIYer on many cars and definitely is not on others, particularly where airbags or integrated screens are involved — a mistake around an airbag connector is not a cheap one.
