What they make

Android head units are the core, sold in a long list of series and sized for particular vehicles, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB radio and premium audio options. Around them sit rear-seat screens from ten to twenty-one inches, flip-down roof monitors, dash cams, reversing cameras and parking sensors, CarPlay adapters, microphones and OBD2 tools. Getting the fitment right

This is where money is wasted in this category. A head unit is sold for a specific make, model, year range and sometimes a specific trim, because the dashboard aperture, the wiring loom and the CAN bus module differ between them. Use the shop-by-vehicle route rather than choosing by screen size, and check the year carefully — a facelift model mid-generation frequently uses a different unit. Look at whether the listing includes the fascia adapter and the loom for your car, or whether those are separate purchases, since a unit alone will not go in.

Before you order and after it arrives

Think about what the original stereo is doing beyond playing music. If your car routes steering wheel controls, parking sensors, a reversing camera or climate display through the factory screen, you need the interface that keeps those working, and that is a question to ask before buying rather than after. Fitting is within reach of a competent DIYer on many cars and definitely is not on others, particularly where airbags or integrated screens are involved — a mistake around an airbag connector is not a cheap one. Disconnect the battery before starting, and if the car has a coded factory radio, have the code to hand.
