Where something is likely to be struck — a shed window, a machine guard, a greenhouse pane at ground level — polycarbonate is the answer. Where it is a display case, a picture glazing or a table protector, acrylic is fine and looks better.
Thickness follows the span, not the size. A large panel supported all round can be thinner than a small one held on two edges, and plastics expand and contract more than glass, so fixing holes need to be drilled oversize to let the sheet move.
